With one final swing Chase sank the last nail into the last board of Genevieve’s new barn. Tired but satisfied, he dragged his shirt sleeve across his forehead, the grit of sawdust scratching his skin.

He looked up, blinked some chilly sweat from his eyes, and watched the widow Long make her way with a tray of cider through the dozen or so men. Beautiful, serene, smiling with warmth, she still had that air of sadness about her that had come to be her constant companion since Samuel’s death.

Samuel Long had been one lucky devil.

By the time she reached Chase she had one glass of cider left.

“Can I tempt you?”

He grinned and took the offered glass. Genevieve reached up and gently removed something from his lashes.

“Sawdust,” she said with that serene smile. “You’re covered in it. Why don’t you go to the house and get cleaned up? I’ve enough heated water for all the men. Besides, the ladies should be arriving any minute now.”

Chase joined the others in the bedroom set aside for them, peeling off his dirty, sweaty shirt and sluicing the blessedly warm water over his arms and chest, soaping up from his forehead clear to his waist.

Barnraising could be a smelly business.

Once he’d rinsed away the soap and freshened up as much as he could without a thorough dunking, he slipped into the set of clean clothes he’d brought.

Lord, had he ever been so tired? The last thing he wanted to do was spend the evening trying to keep a safe distance from Barrett without stirring up gossip. He still hadn’t cooled off from those visions of her in the bath, and that had been days ago.
